The Point System used for calculating the annual FCRSA Field Trial Trophy Winner (information gathered by Ann Steer)
Contrary to popular belief, the Field Trial Trophy is NOT awarded to the winner of the FCRSA Field Trial. Rather it is based on accumulated points throughout the calendar year for placements in AKC and CKC licensed field trials. Points earned in CKC trials and at the FCRSA Specialty Field Trial are halved.
Points are awarded as follows:
Major Stakes:*
- Open
[open to all - Professional and Amateur handlers]
- 1st = 35 points
- 2nd = 30
- 3rd = 25
- 4th = 20
- JAM = 15
- Amateur
[Amateur handlers only]
- 1st = 30
- 2nd = 25
- 3rd = 20
- 4th = 15
- JAM = 10
Minor Stakes
- Qualifying **
[open to all]
- 1st = 10
- 2nd = 8
- 3rd = 6
- 4th = 5
- JAM = 4
- Derby ***
[open to all with dogs under 2 years of age]
- 1st = 5
- 2nd = 4
- 3rd = 3
- 4th = 2
- JAM = 1
Reserve JAMs are awarded an additional 1/2 point
* These placements are extremely rare. In the entire history of the breed, there has been only 1 AKC Field Trial Champion - AFC CH Jon-Lee's Spring Valley Atari and only 4 CKC champions, the most recent being FTCH AFTCH Wynfield's Amani Ace the Hole - Ping. There is only 1 living Flatcoat with placements in a major stake - Hardscrabbles' Kaotic Kosmos.
** A dog is considered to be all-age qualified [QAA] if he has placed either 1st or 2nd in a licensed field trial, or if he has achieved the extremely rare placement in a major stake. There must be a minimum of 12 all-age qualified dogs entered in a major stake for that stake to carry AKC championship points. The FCRSA awards the rare designation *** to be placed after the dog's registered name for all-age qualified dogs. A dog is no longer eligible to run the Qual if it has won ANY award in the Open or has had a placement in the Amateur or two Qual wins.
*** The Derby is for dogs under 2 years of age. The FCRSA awards the rare designation of ** to be placed after the dog's registered name for dogs with a 1st or 2nd placement in the derby [or for dogs with a 3rd or 4th in the Qual.] The AKC compiles an annual Derby List based on points earned in AKC licensed Derbies. A Derby must have at least 10 dogs running in order to award points for the list. The 2005 Specialty Derby, held in Perry, Ga. was the only Specialty Derby that met these requirements. The Specialty Field Trial has only been held since 2000.
